Minor Spoiler Alert: The review mentions certain ugly things that take place in the “Son of the Dragon”.

It was bound to happen sooner of later. After more than a year since its publication, “Son of the Dragon” has received its first disapproving review on Amazon. Please read both the review and my reply. This review is from: Dracula Chronicles: Son of the Dragon (Kindle Edition)

I got grossed out by the graphic way sexual perverts acted in this book. the old man that fingered the little girl. the man that got turned on by strangulating the boy. plus the f word is all over the place. the story was good, just had too much filth.

Author’s Reply:

Dear Reader:

You are very correct in pointing out the “gross” aspects of the narrative. Please remember this is a story about evil people doing evil things in evil times. It was a desperate era and if I were to depict only 100th of  its ugliness it would be much more than what I was able to render in this volume.

As the author I can tell you I am 100% in agreement that the things you mentioned are repugnant. More over, I specifically and strenuously disapprove of the perverse acts perpetrated by certain characters. Finally, as the author I can assure you that sooner or later those characters will meet a harsh justice commensurate with their crimes.

What is interesting is that  my young readers, my middle-aged ones, and my readers in their late eighties/early nineties, OF BOTH SEXES, have praised the book in generous terms and none have raised the objections you’ve raised. I respect your point of view and all I can say is please do not proceed to Book Two, “Empire of the Crescent Moon”, for it does not get cleaner, nor do the evil people act in a less perverse manner. Though, I am told by the early readers the story is even better than that of Book One, “Son of the Dragon.”

Thank you, Suzanne, for taking the time to write the review and to provide your feedback. I also thank you for having the objectivity to agree with the other 62 reviews that the “story was good”.

Finally, I apologize sincerely for offending your sensibilities.

I was entertained by the negative review.
I wouldn’t expect to find “fluffy bunnies” when reading about Vlad. Love, yes. Lust, yes. Bad people that will get their just desserts, oh yes, I believe they will. I read all kinds of stuff, and there is hardly any cursing in these books compared to alot of titles out there. And there really isn’t that much sex, either. So that review kind of came out of left field for me. Keep writing the story YOU want to tell, Mr. Foia. We can’t please all of the people all of the time. Writers have to write to please themselves first of all. After all, the love of the story comes first and foremost. 🙂

You are a wise and experienced reader. You also understand the heart of the author. I hope you will find the following 6 volumes (yes, there will be 8 in all, one more than originally planned) worthy of your love for Vlad.

I am also a writer, so I understand the process. That is also why I am so patient about sequels. I have been working on my own novel about Vlad since fall of last year. It is a labor of love and devotion “and loads of research”. I hope that I can do him justice from my P.O.V. Someday I will go to Romania and walk where he walked. Plans are in the works. 🙂
8 novels now? Very exciting 🙂 I will have to stick to 1.
